About Us

First of all, an introduction from ourselves – Lisa and Anthony (Ant) Meadows. We took over the management of the fishery here in early 2024. We really look forward to meeting you and your friends, hopefully in the not too distant future.

Sweethope Loughs is Northumberland’s oldest established trout fishery and can be fished by boat, by float tube, by wading or from the bank. We are located about 3 miles from the A68 in mid-Northumberland. The loughs are part of The Ray Estate which has a history dating back to the 17th century.

We have two lakes – the Great Lough (140 acres) and the Little Lough (12 acres) both of which are regularly stocked with hard-fighting rainbow and blue trout. We also have a good head of wild brown trout. We welcome anglers, fishing clubs and charity events, at all times of the year.

Since taking over the running of Sweethope Loughs, we have introduced some new ideas to increase the popularity of the fishery including evening boat leagues, fishing competitions, as well as preferential fishing rates for older and younger anglers at certain times of the week.

Ant is an ex-England fly fishing international and Troutmaster Champion, so there can often be some local hints and tips to hand! Lisa also manages the cottages and caravan touring pitches here at Sweethope Loughs.

Boat anglers on Little Lough

Here at Sweethope

The Great Lough has an average depth of 8 to 10 feet and is more suitable to boat or float tube fishing. We have 19 boats available. The Little Lough, separated from the Great Lough by a dam wall, lends itself more to bank style fishing and wading with some weather shelter provided by the surrounding trees. The Little Lough has 2 boats for hire.

When you arrive at Sweethope Loughs you will find ample car parking close to the boat jetty. We also have separate ladies, gents and accessible toilets, with showers with changing rooms. There is also a coffee room offering complimentary tea and coffee should you wish to take a break for drinks, lunch etc.

Sweethope Loughs is a very popular venue for charity activities and hosts a number of angling clubs and organisations throughout the year. Whilst there is often no necessity to book a boat in advance, demand for boats on these days is high, so to avoid any disappointment it is advisable to contact us beforehand.

Whether you are just starting out or already a seasoned angler and you would like to get some tuition here at Sweethope Loughs, just let us know and we can put you in touch with an experienced fly fishing coach.
